The All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools, ANCOPSS, South West Zone, has honoured the Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, with its Award of Excellence in recognition of the unrelenting commitment of his administration to the advancement of education in the State.
The award was presented to the Governor at the opening ceremony of the 2019 Mandatory Continuing Professional Training, MCPT, with the theme, “Effects of Social Media on Students’ Academic Performance”, held in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
The South West Bloc Chairman, Mr. Abiodun Omotoso, specially commended Governor Akeredolu for giving priority to the welfare of workers in the State through regular payment of salaries, provision of enabling environment, appointment of Tutors-General and strong support for Ondo ANCOPSS as well as the ongoing MCPT.
He explained that the professional training served as an avenue to celebrate, exchange views and ideas, chart a new course for improved teaching and learning, adopt best practices and upgrade the quality of principals.
The South West ANCOPSS comprises the “ELOOOO States” : Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Oyo.
In his welcome address, the Ondo State ANCOPSS President, Mr. Johnbull Mebawondu, saluted the courage and total commitment of Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu to engender development, not only in the education sector but also in all spheres of Ondo State’s life through the entrenchment of good governance and rapid responsiveness to the plight of the citizenry.
He particularly applauded the Governor for prompt payment of salaries and arrears, massive renovation and construction of schools, road construction, regular promotion of workers, strong moral and financial support for ANCOPSS, appointment of Tutors-General, sensitisation of girls against breast cancer by the First Lady, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, among other outstanding achievements.
The ANCOPSS President who equally solicited for more support from the Governor in various areas to further take the State education sector to the next level of greatness and make the State a cynosure of all eyes in Africa, also expressed hope that the production and deliveries at the training would add value and flavor to the education sector.
Declaring the event open, the Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, called on all stakeholders in the education sector to join hands together with his administration to uplift the standard of public secondary education in the State.
Governor Akeredolu who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Chief Olugbenga Ale, warned schools against collecting illegal levies and charged the State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to curtail the ugly trend and be more proactive in ensuring effective supervision and monitoring of schools in the State.
While noting that his administration would not shy away from its responsibilities, the Governor assured that the State Government would continue to support programmes targeted at enlarging the horizon of teachers and principals in the State.
According to the Governor, it is the desire of his administration to increase the enrolment of school children and make schools child-friendly, adding that this is evident in the implementation of ‘Home Grown School Feeding Programme’ in primary schools and the aggressive renovation and construction of blocks of classrooms, toilets and perimeter fence in schools across the State, with 1,067 primary schools benefiting from the government intervention.
Critical stakeholders in the post-primary level of education were in attendance at the ceremony.
